Would you take the same career path that Steve Jobs took? Why or why not?

First of all, now I can picture myself as a technopreneur, but taking the same career path as Steve Job?, I think he is way capable of managing a business like his business, Apple Computers and Macintosh, than me managing the same business. As I watched the movie, Pirates of Silicon Valley, the thoughts abruptly came to my mind and keep thinking to myself; if I am going to take the same career path as Steve Jobs' maybe then I could be like him and make myself a good technopreneur and what if I don't take the same career path as Steve Jobs' and make my own career path, then I could make myself what ever I wanted to be. If I will make my own career path, I could work at a big and good company that has a high salary, good enough to provide my needs and wants. I did accept the fact that I’m not that good as Steve Jobs in terms of communication. I don't bear a charismatic personality or factor that can lead me into my success of being a technopreneur. though I have faith in myself and believed that I could be as successful as Steve Jobs and also Bill Gates, I can never fool myself to believe that I can make a businessman like them. Then the answer that I will state is a definite NO, because of the fact that I’m not like him at all, even though I could at least possibly be a technopreneur someday I will not the same career path as his. There certain characteristics of him that I did not have and I don’t need to have, just for the reason that I don’t like it. And it really bothers me that why would I take the same career path as his if I can make my own career path in my own way and maybe, just maybe, in a better way. Though I’m not that confident that I can be a technopreneur but I’m that sure that I will be a high-earner employer or employee and keeping in my mind that it is to be an employer that I must achieve not to be an employer.

I will not take the same path as Steve Jobs, why? It’s because it is not that easy to take a career path especially in the field of technology. Nowadays, many companies that are in the technology business and obviously it is not that easy to make a company like that. I’m not sure that if I put myself into a computer business like Steve Jobs, it would be a hit or could get any popular like his, because computer businesses nowadays are so at-the-top that if you'll try to make a business that involves computers, you can never make certain your success into that business. As I said earlier it is never an ease to get in a business like Apple Computers and Microsoft Corporation, even if you don’t have to compete with them globally there are many competitors out there in the urban that you have to face. And as we all know that numerous of operating systems right now are out in the market and there are also open-source operating systems that can be downloaded through the use of internet. So the questions came to my mind and ask myself, “So, why would I take the same career path as Steve Jobs and including Bill Gates if there are a lot of these kinds of computer software out there?”, then I could put in the picture that if I will make a business like there’s, I have a small chance of excelling in that kind of business.

Reflecting to the movie that I watched a week ago, there are many factors of his characteristics/personality that I don't like in Steve Jobs that gives me another reason why I can’t take the same career path as his. Like him being a short tempered boss to his subordinates. I think I could not be like that when I’m a boss I would be much patient to my subordinates and understand them as well, because as a leader to them I must lead them in the right direction that they will be more motivated under my leadership and also to gain their trust for the good of my company. The Steve Jobs that they knew of being a tough and a rough boss is not also forgotten. A tough and rough boss has never and will never come into my mind, because if I’m going to be a technopreneur, because I know to myself that it can bring me down from my success. I don’t like him as a self-centered person that only makes him think of his own self and to the company without knowing that the people around him are left behind him. Finally, the last thing I don’t really like in him is being a stubborn; he never listens to others’ opinions, suggestions and never wanted to be told by another people. And even the downfalls and all the bad or negative things that are said to him, he did endure all of that without bothering it much.

Wanting much to decide what you really want to be in the future, there is no acquiring that you can be in a career in the future the way you planned it to be, because the things happen in this life of ours are just choices we need to choose. And when unfortunate things deal with you your life abruptly but slightly changes its path yet always makes you the leader of your own life. Whether you want to make your own path in the direction you want it to be or not, you just have to make the right decision for the right choices. No one wants to fail in our lives especially the things or people that we hold on to and those people who hold onto us. The least that we can do right now is to drive our own lives to the paths where we wanted to go.

Reflection to the Personality traits test we had 2 weeks ago...

To know own self is a good thing for us such that in every person living in this world to know oneself is the only thing that can lead him or her to somewhere he/she want whether in good or bad way. Because you can never excel in such things or works or jobs without knowing what you can do best or what you are really capable of. Those things can be learned in such many ways like; in your daily life you encounter things you do expect and also those things you do not expect and by those things whether it is a problem or not, you learn something within that situation that you tackle even if it brings you down because there are things that you need to learn in every step of your day not only through successes but through mistakes also; and there are also things you learn through exams that is given to you, without knowing the result of your exam you need to accept what result may come out after the exam. I know that exams like this have no wrong and correct answer such that all you need to do is to answer the exam honestly and with all your heart. Even if it has corresponding points on what you answered on the exam, whether the result is high or not or you are not satisfied with the exam, you need to be happy with the result because somehow it helped you to know yourself even in the simplest way. And there are still a lot of different kinds of ways to learn something in your own self. This learning stuff doesn't take much of your time and can never interrupt in to what you are doing in your daily life; you just know it when you learn it.

For me I know much of my own self than the others in terms of attitudes and personalities. I know that with my attitudes and personalities, I can use it as factors that can contribute to my success. Also remembering that there are personalities in me that I need to control in order for me to bring myself to the top. I will never do what Steve Jobs did to his career, I mean, there are factors in his personality that did bring him down. And I don't like to happen it to me also, because I might lose the things I already gained and it’s not that easy to reach the goal you hope for in your life. Steve Jobs was lucky enough that he brought Apple Computers in to reality and make it a big business, if not he couldn't get back in to what he has worked hard for. That's why I need to control or limit the worst attitude I had so people would act and think positive towards me. No other person can know more than yourself but only you, yet there are certain people who tell things about your personality and your attitudes and still don’t know who you really are. These are the people who misjudged you and those people who quickly judge other people. If I was in a place of being misjudged by another person, I will let it pass and have his/her own way judging me which is wrong. There are more things important than facing these kinds of people and I wouldn't take it that hard because I know more "ME" than them.

"What is really the purpose why we took the personality traits exam? Is this important to us? What do we really need to know that even we don't know to our selves?” I said to myself on the day that we are going to take the said exam. Maybe we take that exam for us to know who we really are, so we will be aware of our own self if there are any things that can do good or bad to our fellowmen, but still not knowing what the exam is all about. Or maybe we need to take the exam just to answer the assignment number two that has given to us few weeks ago. And later on just to find out that the exam is all about for us to know if we really are capable to become a technopreneur or not to become a technopreneur or is there a little bit chance for us to become one. And it is my first time to take this kind of personality traits exam, I never had this kind of exam because this is the first time I took myself in to and enrolled in to a subject course that is all about both entrepreneur and technology at the same time. By that it involves more of entrepreneur which gives the reason for me to be like a first timer to take that kind of exam. And to think that the exam was so hard but as I take the exam it turns out that the exam was that easy such that you only have to be honest on to what you’re going to choose from the paired situations. So in every corresponding numbers I encountered questions that you have to choose between other stuffs and the thing that involves much in money and in business. And that gives me an idea that this exam is really helpful for us students for us to know the potentials in us to become a successful technopreneur or businessmen. I thought that this personality traits exam was just an ordinary exam that most of the students take from their professors/instructors. Because at first when I saw the exam it’s just a bunch of sentences that have money involvement and other personality situations in it. so I started to answering the exam as I said earlier, but in every situations given I said to myself what if I don't answer it honestly, instead I will answer it according to what is the correct answer that can lead me to have a high score and just to show to my classmates that time that I have the businessman in me because I got a high score. Yet I didn't do it because the truth is, even if I "cheated or lie" to the exam, it’s like I lie also to myself. And with that kind of act, I’m already fooling myself and it’s a shame on my part even if they did not know that I lied in every number we answered. By the way I got the score of 43 (forty three) which describes to somewhat entrepreneurial and it makes me like the result.

The personality traits exam really got me there in telling me whether I am going to be a technopreneur or not or just maybe it just did show me that I have a potential of being a technopreneur someday. though I don't have to be like Bill Gates' Microsoft Corporation and Steve Jobs' Apple Computers, with the personality traits exam we had last week, I know realize that I have the potential to be a technopreneur. I can't believe to myself that I have the same potential as to my other classmates. Because we had the personal traits exam together and it was a good time for me to take the exam such that I had my mind open in that kind of exam that you choose to which situation are you going to take. As I go further to the situations given, I already find myself already being a technopreneur due to the fact that the choices given are all about money and some other stuff. And as a one of the majority of the people who seeks more of money and less of standards in life, I did choose those situations that money is more needed. But not all the paired situations I did chose the most are those situations that involve money, because there are some situations that personal traits of being you reigned rather than being me as an all-money-in-mind thing. Not all the times you have to think about the money because there are times that the real you is more important than the money you can earn. Your business my lead you to your success but neither the business nor the money you earn can bring all the real you to your so called success in life. You have to give both much time in balance so the businessman in you and together the real you can fit together and that might just bring you to your greater success that you least expected.

And there are question keeps bugging me about the things that are keeping me away from setting my mind to become technopreneur and no only to become the most of the people expected they become to be, to become an employer. And these are the following questions;

1 Do I really have to be a technopreneur to provide my needs?
2 Does really being a technopreneur can help me out in my financial needs?
3 Am I going to be ready to become a technopreneur?
4 Am I willing to give my time (because being a successful technopreneur, it takes time for you to build your own business) for me to become a technopreneur?
5 Is this really my goal in life? Or am I willing to change that goal? (Because I know in myself it can bring me to greater success that I least expected in my life.)

These questions remind me of the question that is given to us by our professor in our assignment number one. "How do you see yourself as a technopreneur?” that is the question I’m talking about. Though after I answered that question and thought of it many times I’m not really satisfied of me being a technopreneur. I still have my doubts of being a technopreneur, its because at the first day that I enrolled in the course Bachelor of Science in Information Technology or BSIT, I asked myself what is really going to be my life or shall I say what are really my work/job after I finish my studies and abruptly say to myself "I am going to work at a high-salary, known, and good company.". My mind is locked up to those things I want to be and where to work at when I finished my studies at college. though the change of mindset that is taught to us by our good professor is a life changing or a career path changing, I still got the same mindset as the old one I had before that I’m going to be working at a company and be an employee instead of being and employer. And time to time I want to change the mindset of mine, because such mindset that I bear for a long time is not that easy to forget or to change it abruptly. Though I’m at a stage of confusion to what I am going to do with the mindset, that I’m going to change it or I’m just going to stick with my own mindset. I’m having this confusion because I lack of resources to become a successful technopreneur, though I have my determination to become a technopreneur, the ideas for a good business and especially I’ve done the personal traits exam, and I found out that I am capable of being a technopreneur. But still I don’t have the money to start my own business, I don’t have the resources I need in order to build the business I want in order to become one. So that’s why I have my hesitations to become or to train myself to turn out to be a technopreneur someday. But with the purpose of why I am studying at college is for me to finish my studies and be able to work and gain money to provide my financial needs. And perhaps when I finish my studies and am able to set aside the money that I can and will earn. I can possibly make my own business even if I have to start at a small business because that’s where most of the big businesses came from. And with the things I learned from the personality traits test, I realized that in some there are things in ourselves that need to be learned not only in our own ways, but also in other people, like what our professor/instructor teaches us in the school. And finally, as I earlier "I am still learning and willing to learn how am I going to change my mindset even if it takes a long period of time.", because change is a good way to know one self better and better.

Being a technopreneur someday.. XD

How do you see yourself as a technopreneur?

This is a bit confusing question for me to take, because at first I really didn't see myself as a technopreneur someday. but then the subject course called technopreneurship where did I enrolled in, I came to think about "what is technopreneurship?", its a subject course that teaches us about both technology and entrepreneurship together at the same time. Maybe technopreneurship as I define it to myself is also about earning money through technology. First things first, there are a lot of resources around us in order for us to become a successful technopreneur. It’s just, many people, especially those who were illiterate about computers and technological stuff, don't know about technopreneurship. So that's why those who were literate about computers like us students taking Bachelor of Science in information technology and Bachelor of Science in computer science has to become a technopreneur. Because when we start and run a business, we could hire those people who have no job as our employees and give them a job. So we can help ourselves to have a financial freedom and at the same time, we can help other people. especially that there are allot of people here in Davao city that has no job at all and finding a hard time to get a job because the Philippines suffers from job inflation based on the statistics. Fortunately, if allot of computer literate students will become a technopreneur, there are also allot of opportunities for those people who are jobless. And by that Davao city will attract more investors, specifically foreign investor, to come here in Davao city and invest to the companies managed by us computer literate students.

When I learn that technopreneurship subject course has its perspective about being an employer instead of being an employee. It has been thought to us by our good professor that we need and must have such kind of mindsets in order to go further. Remembering the activity we had in our class, connecting the nine dots using four lines contiguous without lifting the pen/pencil from the paper. With the activity we had, I learned an idiom expression "think outside the box". I abruptly say to myself "why didn't I think of that", it's because I did focus only on those things that are obvious not knowing that if I think differently that time and see things further than the usual, I would've got it correctly. Thinking more creatively without being restricted by common ideas could help you become a good employer. I did start thinking that why not I become an employer and seeing myself as a successful technopreneur someday in a company that I own, run and manage. And a change of mindset is a good thing that has happened to me. Though my mindset about the employer-employee thing is changed I still have my doubts of being a technopreneur. Then I did some soul-searching. And still there are many questions I’d like to ask myself before engaging of becoming a technopreneur, like;

• I ask myself, whether I am capable of running a business or not?
• Am I really going to be dedicated to risk the loss of something when I drag myself into this?
• How am I going to start my own business and become a technopreneur?
• how can I manage my time in building the company and at the same time having time for myself and,
• Finally, can I really earn money with this?

These questions coming through my mind are just the thoughts I need to decide am I really going to be a technopreneur or just stick to the way it is suppose to be, by becoming an employee of a company. And bring back the old mindset I have and forget the new mindset that I learned from the subject course technopreneurship.

And as I encounter this kind of question, it bugs me out and something has come to my mind; me, becoming a technopreneur someday or the other way around, be an employee of a company. Different kinds of thoughts came to my mind about technopreneurship and it can help me decide whether I’m going to be a technopreneur or not at all. But I did see my self working at a good company, being a good employer to his employees. Motivating each and one of them, the same as I motivate myself for every problem I crossed. As a good employer I may able to adapt well to changes and be flexible, overcoming weaknesses and reinforcing my strengths, manages resources well, and leading the company itself and its employees. And not leaving behind the idiom "think outside the box", because as a good and hardworking employer implies changes in a company and obliterating old methods in research and solving solutions for the company. Not only should the employer apply this to oneself but also with the employees in the company. As a technopreneur, I would like to see myself working with my friends because it would be more comfortable for me to work with the ones I have known for a long time. then I would like to see myself as a model CEO to other CEOs of other companies and it is because of my leadership and having my company grow globally as what they least expected. Also I want see that my company would grow globally competitive to other companies. And for the company I want to see picture it that it is dealing with technological stuffs like; gadgets, computers, computer software, computer hardware, laptops or notebooks and net books. It also deals with networking devices, tools and software. The company has its own command center for all the Bachelor of Science in information technology students and Bachelor of Science in computer science students for them to nurture and leverage off their own skills. Maybe I would like my company having branches through out the country and perhaps in the other countries.

Thinking that it is not hard to be a successful technopreneur, well, think again. it's easy for us to foresaw things the way we want it to be, but its not the same as the reality and without the right factors or characteristics of being a good technopreneur your way too far to your expectations to what you want to become someday. But with knowing the factors of being a good technopreneur, especially the SEED, you might become one someday. And I was hoping that all the things mentioned above will happen just the way I want it to be.

Pirates of Silicon Valley thing..

What are the factors that contributed to the success and failure of Steve Jobs as a technopreneur?

Well, I think that, as a technopreneur, Steve Jobs was born to be a good and one of the leading technopreneur in the world of business. It’s his destiny to become one. Base to the docudrama movie written and directed by Martyn Burke, Pirates of Silicon Valley, way back in the early 1980’s, in the world of business, no other businessmen or technopreneurs can get the better of Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs along with his good friend, Steve Wozniak, were inspired in working with computers. They suddenly form their own company, Apple Computers and making their own computers in their garage. Steve Jobs never stopped on making steps towards on his greater success and he knew that it’s not that easy for him to go reach his goal. I think he is the only person I knew that could have done those kinds of risks in their business careers. And I can tell that he is successful right now. With those downfalls he encountered and the risks, he did never give up.

The factors that contributed to the success of Steve Jobs are;

The optimistic side of him always reigns supreme. With that kind of characteristic he bears he will never be back down with all the problems he encounters and will encounter on the future. He knows that there are always situations that horrible things could happen to his job, but still he drives himself into that situation and resulting to a good post. He possesses the will to drag his self to the risks in order to make it to his goal. And has a strong belief in to what he is doing and he fails his personality of being optimistic never disappeared. I think that being an optimistic person like Steve Jobs is an effective tool to deal with trauma and depression.

He is an enthusiastic and a dedicated person towards his works. In the movie, when he made up his mind to do such thing or work, he abruptly make it and with all his attention put into that what is he working. He did take risks when appropriate, knowing that risks are the only way to grow. Steve Jobs also asserts in all decision, he also makes good decision fast and has confidence in his choice. Unless, they risk something, even if that’s not that immense. He makes wise decisions in order to achieve what he desire in their job. He also stick out above the rest, he harness his own thoughts and also negative thoughts and choices that cannot stay in his mind, so, he could make quick and good decisions for his company's best.

Steve Jobs is a kind of zealous person which makes him so enthusiastic and eager towards things what he likes the most, and that's being a technopreneur. He was that eager to leverage off his lifestyle into a higher level together with his friend, Steve Wozniak, that's why he managed to pull of the strings and make his own way to the top among businessmen/technopreneurs. Though his failures act as an obstacle for his success, he did never thought of stopping on what he knows he may able to excel in.

He has staggering communication skills towards other people. Being a technoprener running a business, there’s a time when business opportunities fail to remember the needs of their employees to keep in mind the instruction or messages given to them. Despite the best intentions to the company, they may fail to develop their work because such instructions or messages that need to be delivered clearly to the employees were not conveyed to them properly. And some employees, though not all employees need this kind of handling, need messages to be delivered to them repeatedly before they can take in the information given. It is very important, as a technopreneur, to stay in touch with your employees by communicating and providing consistent feedback towards their work. In line with things said above, Steve Jobs has a strong and good communication skill and he is a motivator and charismatic leader.

He is productive and creative person, he thinks differently than the usual. That is why he can make ideas out of something and make it as a key for another step to his success. He could make simple ideas of his and his friend, Steve Wozniak, and the people around him, into greater ideas and make it into reality as to what could possibly happen in a job. Being a productive and a creative person, especially when you are a technopreneur, really helps you to succeed in to what are your goals or objectives into your business because with that kind of factor in you, you can make something out of nothing. And that is also the key for the success of Steve Jobs as a technopreneur.

The factors that contributed to the failure of Steve Jobs are;

Being such a short-tempered boss. Steve Jobs as a boss to his employees, there are times that he is not that contented to the work done by his employees. He is a kind of person that when he knows that there is something left that can still make something out of it then you should not leave it behind. For him, maybe making the best out of every resource found around an employee’s workspace would always be kept in mind of the employees. So they can't get caught their selves into a short-tempered boss like Steve Jobs that could probably get you out of the job.

He is tough, rough and intimidating boss. Steve Jobs, I think he is known to be the toughest, the roughest and intimidating boss among the bosses in other companies. In connection with that, he is also a micromanager, because he tends to be expecting and requires a constant performance feedbacks. And sometimes micromanagers are usually annoyed when employees make decisions of their own without consulting the managers, even if the decisions are within the employees’ hands.

The factors above made him a very much a big deal to those who would like to become a technopreneur, it’s because of the factors that brought him to his failures and success. I think that the factors that contributed to his failure are just the right things he needs to learn from his mistakes. Because in every things we do or will do there are such factors in ourselves that can lead us in either failure or success, and make it up or try to forget the bad personalities which will surely can lead us to our downfall. And always keep in mind that in every downfall we encounter there are always brighter sides on it.
